Morris-Shea Deep Foundations Article
The Deep Foundations article chronicles Morris-Shea’s participation in the specification, installation and testing of the two piling systems for this unique project. This informative narrative describes the highly-technical construction process employed by Morris-Shea to install DeWaal Direct Displacement Pile and PC-CIDH pile systems in an historic aircraft hanger in the West Los Angeles community of Playa Vista, California. The Deep foundation contractor installed more than 1000 DeWaal Direct Displacement Piles and 400 PC-CIDH piles throughout the hanger complex.
This unusual building is being redeveloped for use as a state-of-the-art soundstage for the production of movies, television and online video. The hanger was initially used to fabricate and warehouse Howard Hughes’ massive troop transport airplane. The structure was later pressed into service for filming popular movies such as Avatar, Titanic, Iron Man and Star Trek.
